Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 November, 2007 : - - Soup Bowls, Barbados – Josie Graves (Isabella, PRI) capped off the 2007 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Men’s season with a win at the inaugural Reef Classic at Soup Bowls in Barbados. The ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 1-Star event enjoyed its first-ever season as an ASP-sanctioned event, making history for the surf-rich Caribbean country of Barbados.
The three-day event saw 96 competitors from 19 different countries take to the waves this weekend to battle it out in swell ranging from one-to-three feet (1 metre), and although conditions were not reflective of Soup Bowls’ raw power and intensity, plenty of high-performance action was on offer.
Graves, who had looked in devastating form all weekend, reveled in the marginal final day conditions, eliminating Ryan Briggs (Jacksonville, FL) in the Semifinals before dispatching of veteran Matt Keenan (Ocean City, NJ) to claim the inaugural Reef Classic Barbados crown.
Keenan’s tack-sharp backhand assault and impeccable wave selection saw the veteran grab an 8.0 out of a possible 10 on his opening wave in the Final clash, but the inconsistent conditions would fail to produce another scoring ride for the veteran, allowing for Graves’ early heat approach of catching several scoring rides to emerge victorious.
The Reef Classic Barbados caps off the 2007 ASP North America season, and the remaining ASP WQS events of 2007 will be decided in Hawaii over the next two weeks. First up in 2008 will be the ASP WQS 5-Star O’Neill SI Pro presented by Ron Jon at Sebastian Inlet, Florida from January 4-11, 2008.
