SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2009 PROMOTION STEPPED UP
"Its awesome", said 2008 winner Kris Meeke

Five months ahead of the 20th running of its premier event, the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) has stepped up its European promotion of Sol Rally Barbados 2009, coinciding with the broadcast this week of British production company Acceleration TV's coverage of the 2008 action on the popular Europe-wide satellite station Motors TV.
Following the distribution of more than 50 promotional DVDs to prospective competitors and the motor sport media at two major British rallies in September, today marks the publication of the first edition of the Club's Overseas Competitor Information document.
Now available as a pdf download from the recently-revamped event web site, www.rallybarbados.bb, the document provides details of the event entry and shipping package and lists the Club's Official Airline, Hotel, Shipping and Vehicle Rental Partners, and the deals each has on offer; it will be updated as further details are confirmed.
The document also includes background information on Sol Rally Barbados 2009 and the key events surrounding it, which will be of particular interest to potential first-time visitors; to get an even better feel for the event, they will also be able to download the short promotional DVD, which can be found on the web site's home page.
New for 2009 is an arrangement with Divi Southwinds Beach Resort in St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church, which will become 'Rally Headquarters', as explained by BRC Chairman Mark Hamilton: "Following some favourable reports from experienced long-term visitors Kevin Procter and Martin Stockdale, who stayed there last year, the Club has entered into a partnership with the hotel. It will not just be somewhere for weary competitors to lay their heads at night, but will provide a 'one-stop shop' for all their needs . . . basically, it will be Rally Headquarters.
"A Rally Office will be open for the two weeks before Sol Rally Barbados and for a further week after; we are also making plans for the Briefing Meeting and Welcome Party to be staged there. The management have been very open to our suggestions, and we welcome their input, in terms of both generous concessions and organisational skills."
Sol Rally Barbados is scheduled for May 30/31, with Shell V-Power King of the Hill, which proved popular with competitors and spectators alike when introduced this year, to be staged on Saturday, May 23. As in 2008, this HillSprint will double as a points-scoring round for local drivers and a 'shakedown' for those from overseas.
From small beginnings in 1990 as a one-day rally for around 30 local competitors, Rally Barbados - it was renamed in 2003 - has grown into the Caribbean's biggest annual international motor sport event, attracting as many as 90 crews, one-third of them from overseas. It is one of the strongest sporting brand names in the region, particularly for visitors from Europe, and a major contributor to the island's tourism product and foreign exchange earnings.
Over the past eight years, 200 competitors have journeyed to Barbados, some of them many times over; these have included nearly 50 from Jamaica, St Vincent & The Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago and more than 150 from outside the Caribbean. Fourteen countries have been represented, including England - with 89 competitors, it boasts the strongest representation - Finland, New Zealand, Spain and Turkey.
In the event's 19-year history, overseas drivers have won only five times although, with two of those victories achieved in the past three years, it appears that the winds of change may be blowing. In 2008, Northern Ireland's Kris Meeke headed the first lock-out of the podium by overseas crews since his fellow-countryman Kenny McKinstry led home Jamaicans Jeffrey Panton and Doug Gore in 1996. This year, England's Paul Bird finished second, ahead of Jamaican Gary Gregg (the winner 2006), while European competitors won six of the event's 13 classifications.
Meeke, who has recently signed to contest the Intercontinental Rally Challenge with Peugeot UK/Kronos Racing, described his Barbados experience as: "the best 10 days of my life. Its awesome, very, very good. They do it properly out here, they create a proper atmosphere - just look at the thousands of spectators. It's so much fun and completely unique to anywhere else in the world."
This year, motor sport fans across Europe have been able to share Meeke's enjoyment with record coverage of more than 24 hours of terrestrial and satellite programming, including Motors TV and Sky Sports, which broadcast to more than 30 countries.

Sol Rally Barbados 2009 (May 30/31) and Shell V-Power King of the Hill (May 23) are organised by the Barbados Rally Club, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007; title sponsor is the Sol Group, the Caribbean's largest independent oil company, and both events are rounds of the Virgin Atlantic BRC RallySport Championship.

JAMAICANS CONFIRMED FOR SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2009

JAMAICANS CONFIRMED FOR SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2009
Panton and Marshall collect Rally Club awards

Jamaican drivers Jeffrey Panton - a former winner in Barbados - and Bobby Marshall have each won free shipping and free entry to Sol Rally Barbados 2009 after finishing the recently-contested Rally Jamaica (December 5-7) as the highest-placed local crews in the four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive categories.
The awards were presented at the Rally Jamaica Prizegiving at the Hilton Hotel in Kingston by Jeanne Crawford, on behalf of the Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) Sol RB09 executive committee chairman Barry Gale. On her return to Barbados, Crawford noted: "The recipients were very pleased, as were the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) committee; offering these prizes helps to further strengthen the already close links between our two events."
Gale added: "Using Rally Jamaica to kick-start the regional promotion for next year's 20th running of our premier event was a great success. I have spoken by e-mail to Jeff Panton, who is already talking about his plans for Sol RB09, and I also know that Bobby Marshall intends to take advantage of his prize.
"With the other interest that was shown by a broad range of competitors while we were in Kingston, all in all, I expect 2009 to be a very good year for Jamaican representation in Sol Rally Barbados."
Victory in Rally Jamaica 2008 was Panton's sixth in the event's 18-year history, and the first in his recently-acquired Automotive Art/Bearings & Seals/Automoto/Jamaica Freight & Shipping Co/Seaboard/Castrol/Barcode/
Active Traders/Maxxis Tires ex-works Ford Focus WRC, in which Colin McRae won the Cyprus Rally in 2001 and the Acropolis in 2002; it was also the second for co-driver Mike Fennell Jnr, who won the inaugural event in 1991 with Clinton McGann in a Mazda 323.
Panton was the first Jamaican driver to finish on the podium in Barbados, claiming second place in his first Toyota Celica GT4 in 1994 (co-driven by Rene McDaniel) and again in 1996 (Rudi Meikle); his victory in 1998, by then with John de Mercado as co-driver, was the first for a regional driver. Jamaica had to wait until 2006 before winning again, thanks this time to Gary Gregg and Hugh Hutchinson in their ex-Carlos Sainz Focus, a sister car to Panton's.
Marshall finished 11th overall in Rally Jamaica 2008, winner of the JA3 category and highest-placed Jamaican two-wheel-drive finisher, co-driven by Carlington Brissett in the Motor Sales & Service Ltd/Ocean Spray/TGI Fridays/Singer/Auto Source/PPG/Budget Car Rentals/Deryck A Gibson Ltd/Tru-Juice Mitsubishi Mirage.
This was a repeat of their result in 2007, when Marshall was also the JMMC 2wd Driver's Champion and JA3 Driver's Champion; in Rally Jamaica the previous two years, with his former co-driver Thomas Hall, Marshall had finished 18th overall and second in JA3 (2006), then 13th overall, third in JA3 (2005).
Although 2009 will be Marshall's debut as a competitor in Barbados, it will not be his first experience outside Jamaica, as he has rallied in Trinidad; he finished 11th overall and second in Class 2-3 in Rally Trinidad in March this year, then third overall and Class 2-3 winner in Rally Trinidad Preysal in April.

Sol Rally Barbados 2009 (May 30/31) and Shell V-Power King of the Hill (May 23) are organised by the Barbados Rally Club, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007; both events are rounds of the Virgin Atlantic BRC RallySport Championship.

SKEETE FINISHES SECOND IN RALLY JAMAICA

SKEETE FINISHES SECOND IN RALLY JAMAICA
Bajan survivors all finish in top seven

Roger Skeete made a triumphant return to Petcom Rally Jamaica at the weekend (December 5-7), repeating the podium finish of his last visit in 2003. With co-driver Robert Simmons, he finished second in the Michelin/FB Batteries Subaru Impreza WRC S9, 1 minute and 50 seconds behind Jeffrey Panton, despite a challenging weekend.
The Jamaican's victory was his sixth in the event's history and his first in the ex-Colin McRae Ford Focus WRC01 which he acquired just a few months ago; after alternator problems resulted in an early 80-second penalty, he and co-driver Mike Fennell Jnr won nine of the 23 stages run and was outside the top two only twice.
Gary Gregg and Hugh Hutchinson won 13 stages in their similar ex-Carlos Sainz Focus, but their rally lead and their hopes of a fourth consecutive victory evaporated late on Sunday, with seven minutes lost on the final New Works stage. The results remain provisional in respect of third and fourth places overall, following a number of issues - the most recent published results show Gregg in provisional third place.
It was not all plain sailing for Skeete, who claimed one fastest stage time - the overnight replacement of his heated front windscreen for a normal one would have raised visibility issues, had the weather deteriorated on Sunday, while a failing third gear was another challenge on Sunday.
Currently listed fourth overall is Group N winner Doug Gore, who beat Skeete to the flag in 2003. With co-driver Mark Nelson in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, Gore was fastest in Group on 17 stages, challenged throughout by James Betts, who finished fourth in Group N last year, co-driven by Jeremy Gonsalves. Betts clocked three fastest times, finishing a creditable fifth overall and second in Group N.
On the same weekend that Sweden's Patrick Flodin claimed the first Production Car World Rally Championship win for Subaru's new-shape Impreza N14, finishing 11th overall in Wales Rally GB, former British Road Rally Champion Harold Morley clocked up his third Rally Jamaica top 10 finish in five years in his recently-acquired N14.
With experienced co-driver Geoffrey Goddard, he added seventh overall (fourth in Group N) to the fourth (2004) and eighth (2006) places achieved in his previous Impreza World Cars . . . an impressive result in a car he had not driven until it arrived in Jamaica. The N14 sustained damage to the bodywork, radiator and power steering when he hit a gate in Friday's SuperSpecial in the National Stadium but, once repaired, his pace on the stages drew many favourable comments.
Barbados had lost three of its crews by mid-morning Saturday: Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney (Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/
Pirelli/New-Tech Subaru Impreza WRC S9) retired with engine problems, as did Sean Gill and Michael Cummins (Simpson Motors/Automotive Art/Shell V-Power/Yokohama Suzuki Swift), but not before both of them had finished in the top five in the SuperSpecial.
Worse was to befall Jonathan Still, co-driven by Jamaica's David Anderson in his Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3; they crashed at high speed and, while the car did not roll, it suffered significant body damage. Still reported some back pain, but a hospital check confirmed no serious injury, although he was unable to restart. Later in the day, Dean Serrao and Clint Gregory (Subaru Impreza N12) also retired.
Of the 41 entries, only 18 were classified as overall finishers, the other high-profile retirements including Mexico's Ricardo Trivino, with Spanish co-driver Checo Salom in their 2003 Peugeot 206 WRC; having quickly got to grips with the rough Jamaica stages - he was lying fourth overnight - Trivino reappeared for the stages in New Kingston.

SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2009 PROMOTION UNDER WAY

SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2009 PROMOTION UNDER WAY
Strong Barbados team for Rally Jamaica

The Barbados Rally Club (BRC) is using Rally Jamaica this weekend (December 5-7) to launch its regional promotion for Sol Rally Barbados 2009. It has also confirmed next year's dates as Saturday and Sunday, May 30/31, with the Shell V-Power King of the Hill 'shakedown event', introduced for the first time in 2008, slated for the previous Saturday, May 23.
For the 20th running of its blue riband event, the Club is offering free shipping and free entry to the highest-placed Jamaican crews in both the four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive categories the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club's (JMMC) event. Chairman of the Sol RB09 executive committee, Barry Gale, twice a top 10 finisher in Jamaica himself, will be making the trip this year as a spectator.
He notes: "It will be an excellent marketing exercise for us and gives us an ideal opportunity to help foster the friendly rivalry between our two islands; our offer will have all of the Jamaican competitors talking about it and looking forward to it, and it will be fresh in their minds from December until May next year."
That rivalry dates back more than 40 years, to 1966, when the then-chairman of the BRC, Trevor Gale, was invited to compete in a navigational event in Jamaica, along with other Club members, including Bill Mallalieu and John Sealy. Since then, rally drivers and their cars have travelled north or south to engage in enthusiastic and friendly competition, and to try and take home some trophies.
Since the introduction in 1990 of what was originally called the International All-Stage Rally - it was renamed Rally Barbados in 2003 - a steady stream of Jamaican crews has challenged the best of Barbados for its premier trophy. Duncan Stewart was the first Jamaican to claim a top 10 result, sixth in 1992 in a four-wheel-drive Suzuki Swift with co-driver John de Mercado.
Soon after, Jamaicans were knocking much harder on the door - Jeffrey Panton finished second in his first Toyota Celica GT4 in 1994 (co-driven by Rene McDaniel) and 1996 (Rudi Meikle); David Summerbell finished in the runner-up spot in 1995, with Barbados co-driver Stewart Gill in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III.
The breakhrough finally came in 1998, Panton claiming victory, now with de Mercado as co-driver. In recent years, the Jamaican charge has been led by Gary Gregg and Hugh Hutchinson; they finished fourth in 2003 in an Evo VI, third in their first appearance in Barbados in Gregg's ex-Carlos Sainz Ford Focus WRC in 2005 (and again in 2008), and claimed a second win for Jamaica in 2006, also going on to become the first crew to win Rally Barbados and Rally Jamaica in the same year.
Of the two-wheel-drive contenders, Tarik Minott has been the most successful of late, winning SuperModified 11 in 2007, co-driven by the experienced Peter Clarke in the Suzuki Ignis formerly campaigned by Sean Gill and Michael Cummins.
Despite the best efforts of some of its leading drivers, Barbados has yet to lift the crown in Rally Jamaica, but is represented by its strongest team yet this year - seven crews are entered, all of whom are either top 10 finishers or Group winners in the event over the past five years.
Recently-crowned Overall Champion in the Virgin Atlantic BRC RallySport Championship, Roger Skeete has come closest to victory in Jamaica, having finished second to Doug Gore in 2003 - now driving the Subaru Impreza WRC S9 in which Trinidad-based Jamaican John Powell finished second to three-time winner Gregg in Jamaica last year, Skeete will be hoping his partnership with co-driver Robert Simmons will prove to be the winning combination.
The similar car of Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney is another which local fans hope can prevail, Bourne seeking to add a Jamaican victory to those in Rally Barbados (2003, 2007) and Rally Trinidad (2008). Third last year and fourth in 2003, he also has useful knowledge of the stages.
Barbados is well-represented in Group N, with a trio of Subaru Imprezas. The newest of these, the latest N14, has recently been acquired by Barbados-based British ex-pat Harold Morley, who finished fourth in 2004, eighth in 2006 in his previous Impreza World Cars and was sixth overall and leading Group N before retirement last year; as usual, he will have the experienced Bajan Geoffrey Goddard co-driving.
Meanwhile, the crew which placed ninth overall last year, fourth in Group N, James Betts and Dean Serrao, will each drive an Impreza this year; Betts will be co-driven by Jeremy Gonsalves and Serrao by Clint Gregory.
On the two-wheel-drive front, Jonathan Still faces four local crews in JA4 in his BMW M3; with regular co-driver Heath Hazell unable to make the trip, Still is aiming to repeat their Group win of 2006, this time co-driven by Jamaica's David Anderson. Last, but certainly not least - especially in the eyes of Jamaican fans - Gill and Cummins are entered in their Suzuki Swift. While he twice won his Group in the previous Ignis, Gill has posted dnfs on both visits with the Swift, although his impressive fourth overall on last year's Friday night stages at the National Stadium will not be forgotten quickly. Jamaican rules require the Swift to add weight to run in the same Group as local cars, which Gill has decided against, saying: "I'm looking forward to see how far up the overall order we can get." With 18 four-wheel-drive cars among the 44 confirmed entries, he should certainly enjoy himself.

The International Surfing Association will give 40 scholarships in 2009

The International Surfing Association will give 40 scholarships in 2009

December 1, 2008: The International Surfing Association (ISA), the World Governing Body for Surfing recognized by the International Olympic Committee, is proud to announce that it is extending the 2009 Individual Scholarship Program to 40 recipients, an increase of 20 grants from 2008. The ISA is accepting applications until December 12, 2008.

Thanks to the generous donations from Billabong, Quiksilver Foundation and Reef Redemption, the fund for next year’s grants is in excess of $20,000. The scholarship funds will be given to Under 18 Junior surfers from every corner of the world.

The ISA Scholarship Program was created in 2007 and has exhibited astounding success since. The first year included the distribution of five scholarships to recipients from Peru, Ecuador, Jamaica, South Africa and Chile. The program continued to grow, increasing by 400% in 2008 with the distribution of 20 scholarships. The ISA will once again double its numbers in 2009 by awarding 40 grants.

The Scholarship Program aims at achieving one of the ISA main goals, “A better surfing future.” It offers junior surfers an opportunity to improve their surfing equipment while maintaining their studies. Winning recipients must be inspiring characters in their community; they must show a passion for surfing while maintaining good grades. Each applicant must prove they are good students, in financial need and explain why they will be a great ISA ambassador in their community.

ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said about the 2009 Individual Scholarship Program: “The ISA Scholarship Program is a really important part of our responsibilities as an International Federation, for the building of a better world. There are many junior surfers in the world who are good students trying to achieve their dreams as surfers. The ones who actually receive the Scholarship are only a small portion of those who are in need of support. We know the scholarships are a great help to each one of the recipients.”

All countries may apply for the scholarship, even if they are not recognized by the ISA. For those countries that are recognized by the ISA, applications must be submitted through the Federation.

Details to apply for the scholarship may be found on the ISA website at www.isasurf.org. The deadline to submit applications is December 12, 2008. Results will be announced in February.

STRONG BARBADOS TEAM FOR RALLY JAMAICA

STRONG BARBADOS TEAM FOR RALLY JAMAICA
Sol Rally Barbados 2009 promotion starts in Kingston

Barbados will be represented by its strongest team yet when the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club's (JMMC) Rally Jamaica gets under way on Friday evening (December 5). Seven crews are entered, all of whom are either top 10 finishers or Group winners in Rally Jamaica over the past five years.
After Friday's 'Parc Expose' and start at the National Stadium in Kingston, Rally Jamaica heads inland for Saturday's stages through the abandoned Bauxite mines in Lydford and Reynolds, then Sunday's runs through orange groves of Bog Walk, before returning to the capital Sunday evening.
While its members are competing, the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) is using the opportunity to launch the promotion of its premier event by offering free shipping and free entry to Sol Rally Barbados 2009 to the highest-placed Jamaican crews in both the four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive categories.
Chairman of the Sol Rally Barbados executive committee, Barry Gale, twice a top 10 finisher in Jamaica himself, will be making the trip this year as a spectator. He notes: "It will be an excellent marketing exercise for us and gives us an ideal opportunity to help foster the friendly rivalry between our two islands; our offer will have all of the Jamaican competitors talking about it and looking forward to it, and it will be fresh in their minds from December until May next year."
Recently-crowned Overall Champion in the Virgin Atlantic BRC RallySport Championship Roger Skeete has come closest to victory in Jamaica, having finished second to Doug Gore in 2003 - driving the Michelin/FB Batteries Subaru Impreza WRC S9 in which Trinidad-based Jamaican John Powell finished second in Jamaica last year, Skeete will be hoping his partnership with co-driver Robert Simmons will prove to be the winning combination.
The similar Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/Pirelli/
New-Tech-sponsored car of Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney is another which local fans hope can prevail, Bourne seeking to add a Jamaican victory to those in Rally Barbados (2003, 2007) and Rally Trinidad (2008). Third last year and fourth in 2003, he also has useful knowledge of the stages.
Bourne and Skeete run in JA9, the JMMC equivalent of the BRC's M8-WRC category, and will have their work cut out for Group and Overall victory; Jamaica's Gary Gregg - winner in Jamaica for the past three years in his ex-Carlos Sainz 2001 Ford Focus WRC, will be a major threat, as will five-time winner Jeffrey Panton, who now has an ex-works Focus of the same vintage, formerly campaigned by Colin McRae.
Also in the mix is Mexico's Ricardo Trivino, with Spanish co-driver Checo Salom in their 2003 Peugeot 206 WRC; although it is the crew's first visit to Jamaica, their previous experience in World Championship events - Trivino lost a creditable eighth place on Corona Rally Mexico this year to disqualification for wearing the wrong safety gear - will stand them in good stead.
Barbados is well-represented in Group N, or JN8 as it is known in Jamaica, with a trio of Subaru Imprezas. The newest of these, the latest N14, has recently been acquired by Harold Morley, who finished fourth in 2004, eighth in 2006 in his previous Impreza World Cars and was sixth overall and leading Group N before retirement last year; as usual, he will have the experienced Geoffrey Goddard co-driving.
Meanwhile, the crew which placed ninth overall last year, fourth in JN4, James Betts and Dean Serrao, will each drive an Impreza this year; Betts will be co-driven by Jeremy Gonsalves and Serrao by Clint Gregory.
On the two-wheel-drive front, Jonathan Still faces four local crews in JA4 in his Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3; with regular co-driver Heath Hazell unable to make the trip, Still is aiming to repeat their Group win of 2006, this time co-driven by Jamaica's David Anderson.
Last, but certainly not least - especially in the eyes of Jamaican fans - Sean Gill and Michael Cummins are entered in the Simpson Motors/Automotive Art/Shell V-Power/Yokohama Suzuki Swift.

THE BEST of local surfing talent takes to the waves of the East Coast this weekend as the Barbados Surfing Association's (BSA) Lazy Days/Sprite Nationals surf off at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba.

Up for grabs is a $2 000 purse in the men's open division and $1 000

for the best female

surfer in the island.

This year's competition, said BSA president Andrew Lewis, promises

to be bigger and better than ever before, providing the waves are up

to Soup Bowl standard.

"This year, we are really trying to bring it back

to what it was before and we want to have a nice two-day event," he said.

"I believe we should get really good competition, especially from the surfers who are lured by the prize money, provided we get

a good wave. If the waves are good and with the prize money, it could be the best Nationals,"

he said.

Lewis added that

the BSA was trying to recapture the glory of past National Surfing Championships with

this year's competition.

"Years ago, Nationals used to be a big event. It used to be a big thing to be crowned national champion," he said.

Last year's champion Stefan Corbin will be back in the water to defend his title against the likes

of Lewis St John and Jordan Heaselgrave

who is just back from

a fifth-place finish in a competition in Venezuela.

Also looking to regain her form is last year's winner Ametza Nicholls who injured her back earlier this year. She

is up against the Chelseas - Chelsea Roett and Chelsea Tuach - the

two most improved

female surfers.

The best top four open surfers will compete for $800 first place prize; $600 second place purse and $400 and $200 third and fourth-place prizes respectively.

In the women, the top four finishers will receive $400, $300, $200

and $100 respectively.

Lewis hopes the increase in prize money would be an incentive

to all local surfers, especially those who do not normally compete

on the local circuit.

He added the competition could see as many as 48 local male surfers and 16 females taking to the water

in the two-day event.

The event, which

is in its 27th year, has seen champions like Peter Hill, Alan Burke, Mark Holder, Edmund Holder, Jason Stanley, Joe Gamble, Simon Coles, Anderson Mayers and Wendell Anderson

taking the top prize.

Registration closes at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and competition is expected in the Men's Open, Under-18 Boys', Under-16 Boys', the Ladies' Open, Under-18 Girls', body-board,

Longboard, Masters

and Under 12.

BROOKER AND EDWARDS DEFEAT THE ELEMENTS Anna-Lee Alleyne finally wins Champion Navigator title

BROOKER AND EDWARDS DEFEAT THE ELEMENTS
Anna-Lee Alleyne finally wins Champion Navigator title

With the Joe Brooker's Building Ltd/SDRR Hydraulic & Industrial Spares Inc Toyota Hilux caked in mud after a long day battling the elements, Damian Brooker and Derek Edwards emerged victorious in Sunday's (November 9) Nassco November Safari, final round of the Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) 2008 Mud Dogs Safari Championship.
Their victory - appropriately achieved in one of the event sponsor's products - came on a day which presented tough challenges for all, with many sections of the route difficult to negotiate, or even impassable, a fitting end to the first season of the re-branded Mud Dogs Championship. Their victory earned them fourth place in the year-end standings and they will also collect the trophies as highest-placed Novices, Damian snatching the Driver's title from brother Dominic, who had been ahead before the weekend.
Second place was sufficient to secure the overall Driver and Navigator titles for Leslie and Anna-Lee Alleyne in their Bridgestone Tires/AutoZone Inc Mitsubishi Pajero iO; it is husband Leslie's second - he also won in 2006 - while Anna-Lee earns her place in Club history, as the first female winner of the Sextant Challenge Trophy, a well-deserved accolade after her hat-trick of second places between 2004 and 2006 on sunday.
But it was not all plain sailing for the Alleynes; level on points with Barry Gale and Neil Barnard - Champion Driver and Navigator in 2005 - in the Gale's Hatcheries Mitsubishi L200 after the Championship's first two events in March and June, the Alleynes edged ahead after the September Safari, but could not afford a poor result.
Dealing with some mechanical problems, they were seventh at the lunch break, with Gale and Barnard fourth . . . the six-point difference between the two brought them level once again, so the title would be settled on the last route of the season's final event; route 1 winners were Colin Goodman and Robin Hinds (Suzuki Samurai), ahead of Paul Marshall/Ricky Holder (Mitsubishi L200) and Darrin White/Robert Warren (Flyin' Fish Nissan Frontier).
While the first two crews would falter on route 2, White and Warren ended the day third - their best result of the year - and also third in the year-end standings. The Alleynes won route 2, to guarantee them the 2008 titles, with Gale and Barnard third - they ended the day fourth and the season second, just 10 points behind.
In his position as chairman of the BRC's Navigational sub-committee, Leslie Alleyne said: "I would like to congratulate all the competitors, especially the winners, for their remarkable achievements on Sunday. The event was very difficult, both from a driver's and a navigator's perspective.
"At some point all competitors were forced to cut route in an effort to stay within the rally schedule, and this meant we needed to employ strategies to which many of us were unaccustomed. To obtain a good result you first needed to devise a good strategy and, at the end of the day, the crew which was able to cut the least amount of route while staying within the rally schedule was going to be the crew to beat.
"I am also pleased to say, from the sponsor's perspective, that Toyota was well-represented and, of course, claimed victory - had it not been for some of the eight Toyota crews entered, many of us might still be out there now!"
And it is a good job that they're not, as the Mud Dogs are now turning their attention to this coming Saturday (November 15) and the first of what Alleyne hopes will become an annual Mud Dogs Social. Alleyne says: "We will celebrate the achievements of the year and say thanks to our sponsors, also the marshals for their support throughout the year. We'll be showing some video footage of the year's action, there's a DJ, free drinks and free food, including china box pig, soup and many other finger foods that have been kindly donated by our members. A number of invitations have been delivered to our special guests, but non-ticket holders will be able to pay at the door where the admission is $20.00 per person."

CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER ON SUNDAY Season ends for Mud Dogs on Nassco November Safari

CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER ON SUNDAY
Season ends for Mud Dogs on Nassco November Safari

Following last weekend's final round of the Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) Rallysport Championship, this weekend it is the turn of the off-roaders. Sunday's (November 9) Nassco November Safari is the last chance for crews contesting the 2008 BRC Mud Dogs Safari Championship to score points, and all the leading contenders are on the entry list published today.
There is all to play for, and a suitably challenging end to the season is in prospect, with a route set by two of the island's most experienced navigational competitors, Phillip McConney and Derek Gill; each has won the BRC's June Safari twice, Gill as both navigator and driver, while Gill was also Champion Driver in 2004.
Chairman of the BRC Navigational sub-committee Leslie Alleyne notes: "Rory Gray and Brian Fernandes also assisted in setting the event, in an effort to gain experience and also to provide feedback to the route setters from a novice-type perspective, while the route will be re-checked by Kenny Croney.
"Once again, we would like to thank all who assisted in the setting of this event for their time and effort, also Roger Hill for his sponsorship and support. I'm sure that the Nassco November Safari will be very competitive, yet enjoyable, and a fitting end to what has been a great year."
Alleyne, who was Champion Driver in 2006, and wife Anna-Lee lead the respective Driver and Navigator standings in their Bridgestone Tires/AutoZone Inc Mitsubishi Pajero iO, having claimed two victories in the first three rounds. Their total of 178 points gives them a slender advantage of six points over Barry Gale and Neil Barnard - Champion Driver and Navigator in 2005 - in the Gale's Hatcheries Mitsubishi L200.
Two crews are tied in third place - Sean Dowding and Kirk Watkins (Axis Inc Toyota Hilux) have 148 points, as do Darrin White and Robert Warren (Flyin' Fish Nissan Frontier) - while fifth-placed Dominic Brooker and Stephen Dear are the highest-placed novice crew in the SDRR Hydraulic & Industrial Spares Inc/Next Generation Electrical Inc/Joe Brooker's Building Ltd Toyota Hilux; they have 134 points.
Sunday's event will start from Six Roads, St Philip, at 8.00am and finish at Kendal Plantation, St John, where a driver challenge will conclude the competition at around 4.00pm; the lunchtime stopover will also be at Kendal.

SKEETE WINS VIRGIN ATLANTIC RALLYSPORT TITLE

SKEETE WINS VIRGIN ATLANTIC RALLYSPORT TITLE
Bourne loses claim to crown at final hurdle

The Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) Virgin Atlantic RallySport Championship finished in dramatic style at the weekend, as competitors grasped their last chance to score points. With three Group titles and the overall Championship still up for grabs, contenders drove the BRC Winter Rally in committed fashion, spectators enjoying some heart-stopping high-speed action on the loose.
Roger Skeete emerged victorious on a day when nearly every crew suffered some mechanical challenge, not least Paul Bourne, who saw his advantage disappear when a high-speed trip into the canes damaged his power steering system, the time taken for the repair putting him out of the overall running.
This new event on the calendar attracted 26 crews, tackling four stages in Searles on Saturday evening, four in Guinea on Sunday morning, followed by four in the reverse direction at Searles. While dust posed visibility problems on Saturday - start intervals were extended to two minutes - Sunday morning's run presented occasional stretches of mud to vary the challenge.
With regular co-driver Stuart Maloney racing in Guyana, Bourne's co-driver in the Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/Pirelli/
New-Tech Subaru Impreza WRC S9 was karting ace Orry Hunte; fastest on stage one, three-tenths up of Skeete, they looked set for a good run.
But Skeete, co-driven in the Michelin/FB Batteries Subaru Impreza WRC S9 by Robert Simmons, had other ideas; he fought back, fastest on stage two, only for Bourne to retaliate on the two remaining stages, leading by a little over one second overnight.
Although he admits to losing out on night stages, Roger Hill was only nine seconds adrift of the leading pair, holding third place with Graham Gittens in the Mobil 1/Nassco/MotorMac Toyota Corolla WRC; fourth were Neil Armstrong/Barry Ward, despite a driveshaft failure on the Shell/Hankook Tyres/Gunk/Odyssey Batteries Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, with Trevor Manning and Derek Edwards (Shell V-Power/Simpson Motors/Garbage Master Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII) fifth.
Light overnight rain served to dampen down the dust, but also to maintain those mud patches that already existed. Bourne rocketed through the first Guinea stage 1.7secs faster than Skeete, but disaster struck second time through - having misjudged his approach speed, he slid off a right-hander into the canes at high speed. While he was able to rejoin - and be faster than on his first run - the off-track excursion left a legacy.
Bourne explained: "I don't know why I misjudged the corner, but I did. I went down through the gears, selected second - I realised how far into the cane we were going, and needed the drive to get back out." The impact craked the power steering fluid cooler; as Bourne returned to service, he felt the steering stiffen up. Bourne's crew did not have the right part to bypass the cooler, so checked with Skeete and Hill, neither of whom could help, only for one of Skeete's crew to find a perfect replacement in a wood-chipper left in Bourne's yard by a contractor. Bourne then suffered his own 'Felipe Massa moment', elation at finding the part quickly replaced by the realisation that the repair had taken him over the time limit allowed for service and out of the overall running.
While he had lost his chance to add the outright Virgin Atlantic title to the BRC Rally Championship he has already won, he continued to swap fastest times with Skeete, claiming Group second, enough to win the Modified 8-WRC title by seven points from Skeete. Hill finished second overall at the weekend, with Armstrong an impressive third.
Skeete's victory earned him the overall Virgin Atlantic RallySport Championship, based on the best five results from each of the Rally and Sprint Championships; Hill's second place on the BRC Winter Rally also moved him ahead of former points-leader Bourne - Skeete ended the year with 111 points, with Hill 107 and Bourne 105.
The two other Groups left to settle were SuperModified 11 and SM9. In the former, Nick Gill (Castrol Syntec/Lysol/Listerine/Vita Malt/Hennessy/McEnearney Quality Inc Mazda 3) enjoyed a five-point lead over Jonathan Still (Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3), with all to play for . . . 15 points for a Group win, plus three route bonus points, meant the result could go either way.
Gill and Sue Rogers were ahead on Friday night, the stages suiting the front-drive Mazda, but a lead of less than 12 seconds could easily be lost; not entirely comfortable with the handling of his M3, Still and co-driver Heath Hazell finally decided the rear shock aborbers were the problem, as the car was bottoming out. The change of shocks came too late; while Still was fastest on route three, it was the morning stages which would have suited the M3, so Gill won the Group by nine points.
In SM9, Josh Read and Mark Jordan (Automotive Art Toyota Starlet) led overnight, but another gearbox drama meant Sunday would be a struggle. Challenger James Betts (Makita/All Terrain Plus/Star Products/Champion Auto Wrecker/Kendal Sporting/Quik Start Auto Opel Corsa) was faster on all but one of Sunday's stages, but he wasn't having an easy time of it, either, an electrical problem meaning the battery needed recharging between each stage.
Betts won the Group at the weekend, but Read clinched the Group title by 10 points, finishing third behind Neil Corbin and Adam Alleyne (Nassco Ltd/Jason Jones/Auto Solutions Toyota Starlet), another crew to have overcome mechanical problems.

LAST CHANCE SALOON' FOR RALLY CLUB COMPETITORS

'LAST CHANCE SALOON' FOR RALLY CLUB COMPETITORS
Twelve stages to settle final accounts

Twenty-eight crews drive into the 'last chance saloon' this weekend (November 1 & 2) as the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Virgin Atlantic RallySport Championship reaches its conclusion with an event new to the Club's calendar, the BRC Winter Rally; this gravel event comprises 12 stages split into three routes, one on Saturday evening and two on Sunday.
The Saturday start is slated for 6.00pm, following scrutineering in the Searles Factory Yard - four stages will be run in Searles. On Sunday, the rally will restart at 9.00am, with four stages in Guinea comprising the second route; after the lunch halt in the Searles Factory Yard at around mid-day, the final route will use the Searles stage, but running in the reverse direction to Saturday.
Paul Bourne starts at number one in the Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/Pirelli/
New-Tech Subaru Impreza WRC S9, one of nine four-wheel-drive cars on the running order; with regular co-driver Stuart Maloney out of the island defending national honour in the final round of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship at the South Dakota Circuit in Guyana, Bourne will have Mark Kinch alongside him.
Bourne has already put the BRC Rally Championship title out of reach of the opposition, but can still be caught in the battle for Modified 8-WRC in the Virgin Atlantic Championship; he has a nine-point advantage over Roger Skeete, who will have Robert Simmons on the notes as usual in the Michelin/FB Batteries Subaru Impreza WRC S9.
Skeete starts at number three behind Roger Hill and Graham Gittens in the Mobil 1/Nassco/MotorMac Toyota Corolla WRC; since acquiring the car shortly after Sol Rally Barbados, Hill has been growing more confident with each outing, and has been edging closer to the Subaru opposition - in the recent BRC Gravel Rally, he split Bourne and Skeete on three of the eight Searles stages and might have finished second, but for a disappointing showing at the 'dexterity-style' stages which concluded that event.
SuperModified 11 is also to be settled this weekend, as Nick Gill (Castrol Syntec/Lysol/Listerine/Vita Malt/Hennessy/McEnearney Quality Inc Mazda 3) and Jonathan Still (Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3) do battle for the last time this year. Two weeks ago, Gill ended the day seven seconds ahead, but they had shared fastest stage times equally - four each on the loose, one each at the Gymnasium dexterity; there is all to play for this weekend.
In SM9, current points leader Josh Read (Automotive Art Toyota Starlet) is returning to action after failing to score in the second part of the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc's Sailor Gully double-header last month, then missing the BRC Gravel Rally two weeks ago. His absence has allowed James Betts (Makita/All Terrain Plus/Star Products/Champion Auto Wrecker/Kendal Sporting/Quik Start Auto Opel Corsa) to reduce his lead to just 16 points, so a further good Group battle is in prospect. Betts is another with a change of co-driver, to team-mate Jeremy Gonsalves, whose own regular co-driver, BARL racer Natasha Farnum, is also in action in Guyana this weekend.
Modified 7 is looking healthier again after a low entry last time out - Ron and Giselle Layne are back in action in their SDRR Hydraulics & Industrial Spares Inc/Pavements & Foundations Nissan Sunny, as are Freddie Gale and Kyle Proverbs in the Gale's Hatcheries/Nassco/Trident White/VP Racing Toyota Corolla RunX. Group leader Adrian Linton is yet another competing with a different co-driver - in his case, he is keeping it in the family, sister-in-law Alecia having her first outing in the Ravensden/Crane and Equipment/Garbage Gobbler/Morris Straker Construction/Subzero Vauxhall Astra GSi.
Other familiar names returning to competition include Adam Alleyne, who will co-drive for Neil Corbin in the Nassco Ltd/Jason Jones/Auto Solutions Toyota Starlet and Lindsay Farmer, who will be guiding Neil Barnard through the day in the Simpson Motors/Automotive Art/Shell V-Power/Yokohama Suzuki Ignis Sport.
The BRC Winter Rally will finish at the BCTSA Club House with a social, during which the Club will be showing some of the European television coverage of Sol Rally Barbados 2008, which has featured on stations including Men & Motors, Motors TV and Sky Sports; all are invited.

JUDGEMENT DAY FOR MUD DOGS

JUDGEMENT DAY FOR MUD DOGS
Nassco November Safari brings season to a close

With 60 points on offer for victory, and a spread of 30 covering the leading four combinations, anything could happen when the Nassco November Safari brings the curtain down on the Barbados Rally Club's 2008 Mud Dogs Safari Championship on Sunday, November 9.
Champion Driver of 2006 Leslie Alleyne and wife Anna-Lee lead the respective Driver and Navigator standings in their Bridgestone Tires/AutoZone Inc Mitsubishi Pajero iO; victories in the Toyo Tires March Safari and the Regional Fire & Security September Safari sandwich second place in the Shelbury Construction June Safari to give them each a total of 178 points.
Going in to the September event, the Alleynes shared the lead with Barry Gale and Neil Barnard - Champion Driver and Navigator in 2005 - in their Mitsubishi L200; they had finished second in March, then claimed their first June Safari win, but fourth place in September dropped them to six points behind the leaders.
Another 24 points behind, two crews are tied in third place - Sean Dowding and Kirk Watkins, like Gale and Barnard experienced rally drivers, have finished sixth, fifth and eight so far to amass 148 points in the Axis Construction Toyota Hilux, while Darrin White and Robert Warren (Flyin' Fish Nissan Frontier) finished fourth in March and 11th in September, collecting points equal to their better result as reward for setting the June Safari.
Dominic Brooker and Stephen Dear have slipped to fifth in the driver and navigator tables, although they remain the highest-placed novice crew in the SDRR Hydraulic & Industrial Spares Inc/Next Generation Electrical Inc/Joe Brooker's Building Ltd Toyota Hilux; after finishing seventh in March, then an impressive third in June, their September result of 16th cost them two places.
Third place in September, added to 22nd in March and seventh in June, has brought Chris Armstrong and four-time 'June' winner Wayne Clarke (Suzuki Samurai) into the Championship top 10 for the first time this season.
Route-setter for the Nassco November Safari is Phillip McConney, with assistance from Derek Gill - experienced competitors, they have each won the BRC's June Safari twice, McConney as a driver in 2004 (with Kenny Croney) and in last year's 50th Anniversary event (with Tyrone Moseley), while Gill has won from both sides of the vehicle, as navigator to Peter Bradshaw in 2002, then driver with Kevyn Yearwood three years later. A suitably challenging Safari to end the season is anticipated.
Entries for the final round of the Mud Dogs Safari Championship are now open at McEnearney Quality Inc, Wildey; the Briefing Meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday (November 4) at 7.00pm at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association's Clubhouse at Searles, Christ Church.
The event will start from Six Roads, St Philip, at 8.00am on Sunday, November 21, and finish at Kendal Plantion, St John, where a driver challenge will conclude the competition at around 4.00pm; the lunchtime stopover will also be at Kendal.

ALL TO PLAY FOR AT BRC WINTER RALLY

ALL TO PLAY FOR AT BRC WINTER RALLY
Pressure on as Rally Club season comes to an end

The pressure is on this weekend (November 1/2) as the 2008 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Virgin Atlantic RallySport Championship reaches its climax at the BRC Winter Rally; this new event on the Club's calendar is a gravel rally, featuring a total of 12 stages, split into three routes, one on Saturday evening and two on Sunday.
The re-named Virgin Atlantic championship was expanded this year, with competitors counting their five best results from each of the six-round BRC Rally and Sprint Championships towards their year-end Group total; with a maximum of 18 points to be scored this weekend - 15 for a Group win, plus a bonus point for the winner of each of the three routes - a few drivers will be feeling the pressure.
In Modified 8-WRC, Paul Bourne (Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/
Pirelli/New-Tech Subaru Impreza WRC S9) has 102 points, a nine-point lead over Roger Skeete, who has scored in both the Michelin/FB Batteries Ford Escort WRC and Subaru Impreza WRC S9. And it will be a straight fight for the Group between those two this weekend, as Roger Hill does not collect Group points following his switch from the M8-A Mobil 1/Nassco/MotorMac Toyota Celica GT4 to this Group with his Toyota Corolla WRC.
Hill does, however, feature in the fight for the overall Virgin Atlantic title, which is based purely on overall results and doesn't include route bonus points; Bourne enjoys a nine-point lead in this title chase - he has 105 points, compared with 96 for Skeete and 95 for Hill. This weekend, it will be vital for everyone to avoid unnecessary risks.
SuperModified 11 has been hot all year, Nick Gill and Jonathan Still trading times and position, often many times a day. Driving the Castrol Syntec/Lysol/Listerine/Vita Malt/Hennessy/McEnearney Quality Inc Mazda 3, Gill reaches the final round with a slender five-point lead over Still's Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3; either could take the title.
Current SM9 points leader - and reigning Champion - Josh Read (Automotive Art Toyota Starlet) failed to score in the second part of the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc's Sailor Gully double-header last month, then missed the BRC Gravel Rally 10 days ago. That has allowed James Betts, whose season did not even start until Sol Rally Barbados, to slowly chip away at Read's lead.
As they reach the final, Betts is just 16 points behind the Starlet driver . . . if Read should be absent again, and Betts has a good run in the Makita/All Terrain Plus/Star Products/Champion Auto Wrecker/Kendal Sporting/Quik Start Auto Opel Corsa, then Read's position could also be under threat.
Points leaders in some Groups have totals that can no longer be challenged - Neil Armstrong (M8-A Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI), Geoff Noel (P4 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX), Sean Gill (S10 Suzuki Swift), Adrian Linton (M7 Vauxhall Astra GSi), Ian Warren (M6 Peugeot 206), Garry Mendes (M5 Toyota Starlet) and Neil Barnard (P2 Suzuki Ignis Sport) - but there are still knife-edge battles to be fought for the 'best of the rest' title in some of those Groups.
The Briefing Meeting for the BRC Winter Rally, originally scheduled for tomorrow evening, will now be held on Thursday (October 30), at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association (BCTSA) clubhouse in Christ Church; entries will be taken from 7.00 to 7.30pm, immediately after which the Briefing Meeting will start. The entry list will be published Friday.
All competitors must be ready for scrutineering in the Searles Factory Yard by 4.30pm, with the start scheduled for 6.00pm; four stages will be run in Searles before the overnight halt. On Sunday, the rally will restart from Guinea at 9.00am, with four stages in Guinea comprising the second route; after the lunch halt in the Searles Factory Yard at around mid-day, the rally will restart at 1.00pm, the final route comprising four stages in Searles, the course running in the reverse direction from Saturday.
The BRC Winter Rally will finish at the BCTSA clubhouse with a social. BRC PRO Neil Barnard notes: "During the evening, we will be showing some of the extensive European television coverage of Sol Rally Barbados 2008, which has featured across Europe on stations including Men & Motors, Motors TV and Sky Sports; all are invited to help our competitors celebrate the close of a hard-fought season."

TEENAGE BARBADIAN SURFER

TEENAGE BARBADIAN SURFER Lewis St John has been awarded a four-year pro contract worth thousands of dollars with Oakley, the popular sports clothes, equipment and sun glasses line.

St John's mother, Estelle St John, gave news this week of the lucrative deal, which will become effective in December for the former Foundation student, who reigned supreme at last month's New Edgewater Soup Bowl Pro Classic at Bathsheba.

As part of the new contract, St John, who has been sponsored by Rip Curl for the past two years, will receive euro3 000 worth of surfing clothes and another euro3 000 to purchase
surf boards.

"I think this is not bad for a 16-year-old," his mother told WEEKEND SPORT. "He will have all of his trips looked after. There is a budget of euro6 000 and he will receive a bonus if he does well in contests."

She said that Yann Martin, coach and European team manager of Oakley came to Barbados to coach Lewis and immediately recognised his potential.

"His current contract with Rip Curl is ending in December and Oakley will be taking over for the next four years to his Pro Junior age of 20.

"He will be going to Australia to be coached and trained and to watch all the junior competitions in Australia in January and February, next year," she said.

"When the Pro Juniors start back in April, he will participate in a few events in Australia," she added.

The young surfing sensation captured both the Junior and Men's Open titles at the recent classic.

A grandson of former Barbados Prime Minister, the late Sir Harold St John, Lewis was also featured in the July edition of the popular magazine, Surf Europe.

At last month's Soup Bowl contest, he dethroned Jamaica's Makka Pro champion, Johnathan Reece and beat out the likes of Guadeloupe's junior surfer Thibault Brenoel and former national surfing champion, Mark Holder.

He also created waves in contests in France, Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands during the summer months of July and August on the Associated Surfing Professionals (ASP) tour.

Surfing makes its first appearance on Olympic calendar

Asian Beach Games

Surfing Gold Medal at first Olympic recognized Beach Games, Bali Asian Beach Games > Espanol|

: - - Surfing made its first appearance on an Olympic sport calendar of events, compliments of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the organizing Committee of the Bali Asian Beach Games in Indonesia.

It was fitting that the Open division started the program and the surfing standard didn’t disappoint. Fast and powerful, aerials and floaters entertained the large crowd. The man-on-man final, in one metre waves, was an Indonesian affair with Made Raditya Rondi facing off against Made Widiarta. After a slow start Widiarta eventually got to the lead and wasn’t headed.

Third place was Shigenori Suzuki (Japan) with Carlito Nogalo (Philippines) in fourth. Widiarta was mobbed by the crowd as he left the water, a popular win on his home beach. In a variation of event format, a discipline will be decided each day. The longboards are up tomorrow (Monday), then Women’s shortboard, Men’s Aerial and finally the team event to finish proceedings later in the week.

So far the experiment has been a great success. Surfing athletes competing represent Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam and The Maldives. It is a big achievement for surfing to appear here, with the Philippines only recently forming their national Association and affiliating to their National Olympic Committee and The Maldives and Vietnam surfers being represented in such a major event for the first time.

Mohamed Irishad was the highest scorer for the Maldives and Dinh Nguyen Van making the highest wave score for Vietnam. Facing up to the powerhouse Asian surfing nations was a hard but exciting way to enter international competition and great experiences were gained. The medal presentation will take place at a formal ceremony at the conclusion of the whole program.

As an innovation of the OCA, the Beach Games have brought together seventeen (17) sports, competing for Olympic medals around the Bali locations of Sanur, Nusa Dua, Serangan Island and Kuta Beach. Most sports are new to the Olympic family of sports.

Entry is only through National Olympic Committee nomination and within Asia surfing is a new and very underdeveloped sport in terms of organisation, but the OCA see it as a major youth sport and have been willing to give it a chance to shine in its arena.

The beach infrastructure has been managed by the Indonesian Surfing Union national body, judges are all ISA accredited and the ISA appointed Head Judge is Mr Paul Young (Australia). ISA VP Alan Atkins is the ISA Technical Delegate. Contest Director is Mr Tipi Jabrik, supported by Mr Oom Arya and Mr Wayan Pica.

A great contribution “for a better surfing future.” The Bali Asian Beach Games 2008 are sponsored by Pertamina, Samsung, Swatch and “Visit Indonesia 2008”.

BOURNE MAKES IT FOUR OUT OF FIVE

BOURNE MAKES IT FOUR OUT OF FIVE
Mixed fortunes on BRC Gravel Rally

Having slipped to fourth place mid-morning, reigning Champions Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney fought back for a fourth win in this year's Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Rally Championship on Sunday (October 19) in the Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/Pirelli/
New-Tech Subaru Impreza WRC S9.
Nothing was certain until the end of a fascinating day of mixed fortunes for nearly every one of the front-running crews, the gravel stages making for a much more level playing field than tarmac. Despite the heavy rains of the previous week, the loose stage in Yorkshire on which the bulk of the BRC Gravel Rally would run was in near-perfect order by the Sunday morning start, while the return from tarmac to loose had brought fans out in their numbers.
Roger Skeete and Robert Simmons (Michelin/FB Batteries Subaru Impreza WRC S9) declared their intentions early, fastest on the first run, beating Bourne by 13/100ths of a second - it was already shaping up to be an action-packed day, and it was barely nine o'clock in the morning!
Although Bourne responded next time out, snatching a 1.6-second lead, he lost around 10 seconds to an off-track excursion on the third run, which dropped him to fourth. With three top four stage times, Roger Hill and Graham Gittens (Mobil 1/Nassco/MotorMac Toyota Corolla WRC) moved up to second, four seconds behind Skeete and one second ahead of Barry Gale and Cherie Edghill, who had made an excellent start in the Trident White/Simpson Motors Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI.
Behind Bourne, Trevor Manning and Derek Edwards were fifth in the Shell V-Power/Simpson Motors/Garbage Master Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII, but the last stage before lunch ended their hopes of a good result, when the brakes seized after an off on the final corner, costing three minutes; even so, Manning was delighted to get within two seconds of Bourne on the day's final loose stage. Bourne fought back just before lunch, cutting three seconds off Skeete's advantage to reclaim second place.
A good tussle during the morning for fifth position saw Neil Armstrong and Barry Ward (Shell/Hankook Tyres/Gunk/Odyssey Batteries Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI) a little over one second ahead of Geoff Noel and Kreigg Yearwood (Globe Finance/Ezone/DeWalt/Automotive Art/Sunbeach Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) at lunch.
The fight for supremacy in the two-wheel-drive classes was an intruguing one, too; sixth quickest overall on the day's first stage, Sean Gill and Michael Cummins had a few problems during the morning in the Simpson Motors/Automotive Art/Shell V-Power/Yokohama Suzuki Swift, but were highest-placed two-wheel-drive at lunch.
Behind them, Jonathan Still and Heath Hazell were "best of the rest" on their first outing in the new Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3 being shaken down for Rally Jamaica; their advantage over the Castrol Syntec/Lysol/Listerine/Vita Malt/Hennessy/McEnearney Quality Inc Mazda 3 of Nick Gill and Sue Rogers was just hundredths of a second, while Mark Hamilton and Clive Howell were only a second adrift in the newly-acquired McEnearney Quality Inc/Consolidated Finance/Automotive Art/Dunlop Ford Escort MkII.
With the stage reversed after lunch, Bourne clocked a perfect four fastest times; he chipped away at Skeete's advantage by a second or two each on stages five and six, but he clearly had his work cut out . . . at least until Skeete mirrored Bourne's indescretion of the morning, dropping around eight seconds on stage seven. That put Bourne back in charge and Hill less than two seconds adrift of Skeete, as everyone turned their attention to the two dexterity-style stages at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium . . . and that was where it was Hill's turn to suffer.
With the final-day crowds at the Barbados Motor Show filling the spectator areas, there were two runs, the second during a brief shower. Sean Gill was fastest on the first, with Bourne tied for second fastest-time with Adrian and Jonathan Linton (Ravensden/Crane and Equipment/Garbage Gobbler/Morris Straker Construction/Subzero Vauxhall Astra GSi), while the Lintons topped the sheets second time out, ahead of Still and Armstrong.
For Hill, however, 15th and 18th in the two short stages - times were just above and below the minute mark - meant the good work of earlier in the day was compromised; having arrived at the Gymnasium lying third, he would drop to fifth behind Gale and Armstrong. Sean Gill led the two-wheel-drive brigade home, sixth overall.

RALLY STARS 'LET LOOSE' ON SUNDAY

RALLY STARS 'LET LOOSE' ON SUNDAY
Local crews start preparations for Rally Jamaica

The running order published today lists 25 crews ready to be 'let loose' on Sunday (October 19) as the 2008 Barbados Rally Club switches back from tarmac to gravel for the Club's penultimate rally of its 51st competition season; the final round will run over the November 1/2 weekend.
Reigning BRC Rally Champion Paul Bourne will start at number one with regular co-driver Start Maloney in the Banks/Texaco/B-Mobile/Pirelli/
New-Tech Subaru Impreza WRC S9, one of nine four-wheel-drive cars listed. With three victories in four rounds under their belts, the current points-leaders will be seeking to consolidate their Championship advantage.
Close observers of island motor sport are looking forward to Sunday's contest, as Bourne is just one of those entered who will be using the event as the start of his preparations for the loose-surface Rally Jamaica in early December. Bourne missed the BRC Gravel Sprint in March, as his new car had not arrived in the island, so will be looking to build on his experience with it on Rally Trinidad.
That said, the two drivers seeded immediately behind him are also using their recently-acquired machinery on a gravel event in anger for the first time - both Roger Hill and and Roger Skeete have upgraded since the start of the year, so Sunday's event promises some real excitement.
Hill, who has scored in all four qualifying rounds with co-driver Graham Gittens, will see action in the Mobil 1/Nassco/MotorMac Toyota Corolla WRC, while Skeete and Robert Simmons will campaign the Michelin/FB Batteries Subaru Impreza WRC S9, which has replaced the Ford Escort WRC in which Skeete won the March Gravel Sprint.
Many fans are hoping that Trevor Manning, a master on the loose, will get the opportunity to shine this weekend in the Shell V-Power/Simpson Motors/Garbage Master Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII; co-driven by Derek Edwards, Manning is still in capable of improving his position in the Rally Championship standings with two events to run.
There will be others, however, concentrating on the two-wheel-drive classes, particularly those in which the power is delivered to the road through the rear wheels. Jonathan Still is another making preparations for Jamaica - he and co-driver Heath Hazell will also be hoping to move the Hitachi Power Tools/Ocean Spray/Philips Lighting/Crane & Equipments/Castrol Oils BMW M3 back in the Rally Championship top 10 . . . but there is some new competition.
BRC Chairman Mark Hamilton is returning to action this weekend with a newly-acquired Ford Escort MkII; with backing from McEnearney Quality Inc, Consolidated Finance, Automotive Art and Dunlop, he and co-driver Clive Howell will be hoping for a successful debut for the new car, which will run in SM10.
Of course, Still and Hamilton will also have to deal with the front-wheel-drive Simpson Motors/Automotive Art/Shell V-Power/Yokohama Suzuki Swift of Sean Gill and Michael Cummins, while the Castrol Syntec/Lysol/Listerine/Vita Malt/Hennessy/McEnearney Quality Inc Mazda 3 of Nick Gill and Sue Rogers cannot be discounted either.
Competitors are expected to assemble at Searles Factory Yard in Christ Church at 7.00am on Sunday, ready for an 8.30am start. Eight gravel stages are planned, four run in each direction, before the entire field heads for the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium for two short tarmac stages, scheduled for shortly after 3.00pm, following which the event will close with an 'Expression Session'. While the two stages will count towards the overall results of the BRC Gravel Rally, the Expression Session will not be compulsory - those competitors who chose to participate will be allowed one minute to 'express themselves', after which the crowd will decide the winner.
While the recent heavy rains have presented BRC organisers with some headaches, they are determined that the event will run; a course inspection Friday morning was positive, the hot sun of the previous 24 hours having done much to improve conditions.
