Surfboard rental plan developed to battle airline charges

Industry News

SportsKnack aims to solve the airlines/surfboard bags crisis

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 August, 2008 : - - As traveling with a surfboard became a mission impossible, an innovative service was launched last June 3rd. SportsKnack.com was in part created to soothe the pain of fellow surfers traveling to the west coast, enabling them to surf California's Swells with a variety of more that 100 top notch surfboards.

The other part of this service offering is to let surfers ride the best surfboards out there, and rent them to test ride before they buy, these are the kind of boards you would not usually find for rent anywhere else.

Ranging from the sleek Firewires, Kaysen, Keahana, Al Merrick, Surf Prescriptions, Surftech, Aviso Carbon Fiber ($1,200.00) to Laird Paddle Boards ($1,500.00), and at least a dozen more from famous manufacturers and local shapers. Think of it as a Demo ClubTM.

With its innovative online reservation system, SurFanatics are able to view each board front and back, reserve the surfboard of their preference and pick it up at several locations. Every board you rent is prepped with leash, track pad, clear grip and sock; members don't even need to worry about wax!

“Sports Knack has eliminated the hassle of flying in my board. Not only I can find it online and reserve it, but maybe try different ones in order to get the best out of the different swells. It's like traveling with more than 30 boards...” says Daniel Sheinfeld from Kona, HI.

Red Bull Big Wave Africa & QuikSnow on Boardriders TV

Television News

Red Bull Big Wave Africa and QuikSnow Highlight Episode 15 of Boardriders TV

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 August, 2008 : - - The 2008 Red Bull Big Wave Africa will go down as one of the greatest big wave paddle–in events of all time, and was by far the best big wave event ever held in African waves. Twenty to twenty-five foot surf rumbled through the Dungeons Reef throughout the day for some of the best big wave surfers in the world to attempt.

Watch as 25 big wave surfboards get destroyed by the force of the ocean and competitors suffer broken ribs and burst eardrums. There is even a concussion. In amongst it all are some outrageous waves, including Greg Long’s incredible tube ride and young Hawaiian lunatic Mark Healey’s outrageous wipe-outs. South African Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker wins the event.

We go from big waves of Dungeons to the slopes of Tiffindell Ski Resort for the 2008 Quiksnow SA Champs. Watch as pro surfer Stan Badger and pro skateboarder Puddy Zwennis attempt snowboarding for the first time, both with very different results. With disciplines like Big Air, Slopestyle and Boarder X all of South Africa’s snow athletes were giving it stick for top results.

This year also saw a solid junior contingent competing, which bodes well for the future. We feature some great sessions on the Big Air kicker, with some massive tricks and heavy body slams. Highlights include Marcin Jekot pulling a Backside Rodeo (corked 540 degree rotation) to take top honours in the Big Air division.

Boardriders TV Episode 15 airs tonight (25 August) at 18:00 on SS1.

CATTLEWASH, Sand Bank Saturday, August 16, 2008 - It was a short day of competition for the BSA SOTY 4 event. Small random peak beach break waves, making for an extremely difficult day off competition in the open and junior categories

Bruce Mackie, back after missing SOTY 3 due to illness was in top form clinching the top spots in a clean sweep for the Junior and Open events. Finding his way out of the tricky round 1 heat advancing along with Stefan Corbin into the Semi Finals.

It was Chelsea Tuach, taking down the Open Ladies and Junior finals, leaving her fellow competitors looking to beat her score after posting a good wave score in the girls junior category.

Advancing to second position with a personal best in both divisions was rising competitor Allysa Fernandes narrowly edging out Chelsea Roett who still holds on to the points lead in the open ladies category

In a rare appearance on a Longboard, Christian Boos came out to take the top spot in the Longboard final. The messy waves and strong currents forced organisers to put the Junior Under12 and Menehunes event on hold after assessing conditions. The decision whether to hold the event at a later date is still to be decided. With only one remaining SOTY left for the year to be held at Bathsheba’s world famous Soup Bowl on October 4th & 5th, surfers are feeling the pressure with the hottest action in one of the world's best reef breaks still to come.

CASTROL AND MUD DOGS

CASTROL AND MUD DOGS:
A PERFECT MIX
Brydens Distribution excited to be involved with the Mud Dogs.

Dwayne Holmes of Brydens Distribution, local agents for Castrol Lubricants, was on hand at Tuesday’s briefing meeting, to give the gathered competitors an overview of the wide range of Castrol products available. At the end of the meeting, 23 teams had signed up to compete in this weekend’s Castrol Summer Mudfest, at “The Dog Pound” in Searles Factory, Christ Church.
Spectators can expect a day of thrills and spills when competition gets underway at 9am on Sunday. Competitors will first tackle the Tractor Pull, Slalom Course and the ever popular Mud Pit before the scheduled lunch break at midday. The action resumes at 1pm with the Obstacle Course, followed by the Rock Crawl and, should time permit, a second running of the Obstacle Course, this time in reverse direction, a challenge highly anticipated by course designers, Kirk King and Danny Croney.
Terry Mason, Top Dog in the Maxxis May Day Mudfest 2008, will be competing this Sunday as a spotter for Mark Phillips, who finished 2nd to Mason in May, in the Surfers Cafe Suzuki Samurai. Third place finishers, Gregory Farnum and Cody Foster return along with the teams of Dave Lowe/Kirk Payne, and Chris Armstrong/Andrew Croney, in an attempt to maintain the Suzuki Samurai domination of May Day.
They will face fierce competition from the winners of May Day Mudfest 2007, Rodney “Ramma” Mason and spotter Wendell “Biggy” Skeete in their Chevy V8 powered Monster Energy/Rodney’s Trucking/E-Z Sign Shop Mitsubishi Pajero. Ramma, who was forced to retire in the May Day Mudfest earlier this year, due to a bent front drive shaft and broken rear differential sustained in the daunting Obstacle Course, aims to return to the podium in this event. Another favourite in contention are the team of Anthony King/Dave Sealy, winners of the first Challenge event in 2006, who will compete in their Maxxis Tyres/Dynamic Limousine/ RACE1/Bovells Entertainment Toyota Hilux. The team will be using tractor tyres, in hopes of getting through the problematic Mud Pit, a critical edge in this closely contested event.
The event will conclude with a prize giving and social in the evening.
Come meet the crews, see their rigs and celebrate the end of a gruelling event with the Mud Dogs.
NB: Due to unforeseen circumstances there may not be ample food and drinks available at the event.

BATTLE FOR VIRGIN ATLANTIC RALLYSPORT TITLES

BATTLE FOR VIRGIN ATLANTIC RALLYSPORT TITLES
Gill and Skeete lead BRC Championship

While Sean Gill and Roger Skeete are the respective leaders of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Sprint and Rally Championships - both are being chased down by Paul Bourne - there are many more aspiring drivers hoping for success in their Groups in the Virgin Atlantic BRC RallySport Championship. At year-end, drivers will drop their worst score from each of the Rally and Sprint series to arrive at their points total in the RallySport Championship - as all involved enjoy the mid-season break, the picture looks like this:

Modified 8-WRC - while reigning Champion Paul Bourne currently has the upper hand in his new-for-2008 Subaru Impreza WRC S9, Roger Skeete's recent decision to step up to similar equipment means the year's remaining events hold much promise. Having moved up this year, Barry Gale is chasing Skeete hard in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI in which he previously won in both Group N and M8-A - finishing second to Bourne on day two of Sol Rally Barbados was a useful boost - while the addition of Roger Hill in the ex-John Powell Toyota Corolla WRC will add extra spice
M8-A - Roger Hill is not a surprise leader in his Toyota Celica GT-4. By the end of Sol Rally Barbados, he seemed to have done enough to claim the Group again. His recent switch to M8-WRC, however, means that Mitsubishi Lancer drivers Neil Armstrong and Kirk Watkins still have a chance
Production 4 - Geoff Noel is the comfortable leader in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX; in Sol Rally Barbados, he nearly saw off Britain's Ryan Champion, but his local challenge has come from the new and old Subaru Imprezas of ex-pat Brit Harold Morley and returning local competitor Michael Worme
SuperModified 11 - the season's closest contest is between the front-wheel-drive Mazda 3 of Nicholas Gill and the rear-drive BMW M3 of Jonathan Still. There has been little to chose between them: Gill leads the Rally Championship Group by one point, with two wins to Still's one ('Stillo' is ahead on route bonus points, though), while its all change in the Sprint Championship, Stillo with an eight-point lead, until you drop the lowest score, which brings the rivals dead level! Although he claims to drive for fun and not results, Andrew Jones is third in Group . . .
SM10 - the only driver with a 100 per cent record this year is Sean Gill in the giant-killing Suzuki Swift - his four Group wins in sprints, and three in rallies, with maximum route bonus points, leave the opposition to fight for the accolade 'best of the rest'. With a rally third place and two sprint second places to his credit, current leader of the chase is Wayne King (Peugeot 306), although Rhett Watson in his crowd-pleasing Ford Escort MkI and 2008 newcomer Kyle Lashley are within eight points of King
SM9 - Josh Read in his Toyota Starlet has a comfortable advantage of nearly 40 points here, the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record being his non-finish on the second day of Sol Rally Barbados. Behind him, though, it is a fantastic free-for-all - there's a spread of just eight points across five drivers, with David Williams, Neil Corbin and Stuart White in their assorted Starlets keeping at bay the Mitsubishi Mirage of Daryl Clarke and the Opel Corsa of James Betts, who did not start his season until Sol Rally Barbados
M7 - twice winner of the BRC Drivers' Championship, Adrian Linton is ahead in his Group again, despite missing the season-opener and finishing second in the Shell V-Power King of the Hill in his Vauxhall Astra GSi. There are many seasoned drivers in Modified 7, such as Freddie Gale (Toyota Corolla RunX) and King of the Hill winner Greg Cozier (Ford Escort RS2000) who are separated by just three points in their battle for second, but it is newcomer Kyle Catwell (Volkswagen Golf GTI), who is holding off the rest in fourth place
M6 - many have marvelled at the pace of Ian Warren's remarkable Peugeot 206, so it is no surprise that he leads the Group, despite a rare non-finish on day two of Sol Rally Barbados denting an otherwise 100 per cent record. Jamal Brathwaite leads the chase in his Toyota Corolla, a Group win and maximum route bonus points after Warren had retired a fine achievement, while Karl Waterman (Toyota Starlet) just leads the battle for third, ahead of Edward Corbin (Daihatsu Charmant) and Danny Williams (Ford Fiesta), tied on points
M5 - apart from Sol Rally Barbados, with regular visitors such as Kenny Hall, this Group has lacked competitors, although it may produce a future star: karting graduate Dane - son of Roger - Skeete (Peugeot 106) is just 10 points behind leader Garry Mendes (Toyota Starlet)
P2 - as the only driver to have run for the whole year, Neil Barnard (Suzuki Ignis Sport) has the advantage here. Despite missing the Summer Nights Tarmac Sprint, he still has a massive lead, although Toyota Starlet drivers Rhett D'Andrade and Andre Snobel are now collecting points

CASTROL SUPPORT MUD DOGS SUMMER MUDFEST

CASTROL SUPPORT MUD DOGS SUMMER MUDFEST
Castrol Lubricants has been synonymous with Motorsport worldwide for many years, through their support of Team Toyota Europe in the World Rally Championship in the early 90’s to supporting Off Road Racing in South Africa in the new millennium; and this relationship continues to grow with their sponsorship of the Summer Mudfest to be held by the Barbados Rally Club on August 24th at “the Dog Pound” at Searles, Christ Church.
Entries for the event opened at McEnearney Quality Inc in Wildey last Friday and remain open until 4pm on Tuesday August 19th, after which there will be a final chance for late entry at the Briefing Meeting to be held at the BCTSA Clubhouse, Christ Church, at 7.00pm that same day. All late entries will attract an additional fee of $20. Persons considering entering, but unsure as to whether their rig will be ready in time for the event, are still encouraged to enter prior to the briefing meeting, as they will receive a full refund, should they notify Mud Dog Committee Chairman, Leslie Alleyne by Friday August 22nd of their failure to be ready in time.
To ensure the event start on time, organisers have changed the vehicle scrutineering date to Saturday August 23rd at 1pm, at Searles, instead of holding it the morning of the event. This will also give competitors an opportunity to see the redesigned challenges in which they will be tested the following day, as well as give spectators a chance to see the 4x4s up close, and quiz the drivers on some of the modifications that have been made to their respective rigs.

Firewire partners with ...Lost Surfboards for line of boards

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 August, 2008 : - - Firewire has partnered with ...Lost surfboards offering its celebrated Future Shapes Technology in a limited range of …Lost Surfboards.

'When we started FIREWIRE, due to the complexity of our technology no one was willing or able to build the surfboards for us. As a result we had to invest in our own factories and after two years we have an amazing vertical supply chain', said CEO Mark Price.

'We recently decided to leverage that platform in a very disciplined manner and thought about which Brand would best fit with our technology and shared our view of where the surfboard market was headed.' …LOST was an obvious choice. Aside from the global strength of …LOST Surfboards and Matt Biolos’s shaping talent, Matt was an early supporter of Firewire’s technology.

“When I first saw Nev in Europe a few years back, with boards built in the Future Shapes Technology (FST), I knew it was something I wanted to get my hands on,” Said Matt Biolos, ”FIREWIRE was formed a year or so later, and brought the tech to the USA. The first thing I did was send an email ordering 300 SD-2's.

They shut me down at the time, so of course we began to berate, tease, harass and generally poke fun at them, but I’m stoked they’re now able to come through. I feel strongly that the FST (Future Shapes Tech) is a product that has viability and demand in the market. Combined with our user friendly, as well as competition level shapes and designs, it gives ...LOST a performance proven technology that we can offer to our best customers as well as our team."

“I never forgot that email”, Price continued, “but back then we could barely even build our own boards, never mind making them for anyone else. Obviously that is not the case today”.

Firewire has no plans to offer the technology to other shortboard manufacturers. “I realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we believe we have the best technology in the world and that gives us a competitive edge. This collaboration gives Firewire technology the added credibility of an endorsement from one of the premier surfboard brands in the world, and cements …LOST Surfboards reputation for leadership”.

The …LOST surfboards will feature the balsa parabolic rails and sandwich construction of Firewire’s FUTURE SHAPES TECHNOLOGY and will be shown in the …LOST booth at ASR and Surf Expo. The boards will be sold through …LOST surfboard retailers in late 2008 and Spring 09.

Hottest water on Earth found in Atlantic Ocean

Environment News

H
ottest water on Earth found in Atlantic Ocean

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 August, 2008 : - - Deep down at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, geochemist Andrea Koschinsky has found something extraordinary: "It's water," she says, "but not as we know it." Three kilometres beneath the surface, sitting atop what could be a huge bubble of magma, is the hottest water ever found on Earth. The fluid is in a "supercritical" state that has never before been seen in nature.

The fluid spews out of two black smokers called Two Boats and Sisters Peak. Koschinsky, from Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany, says it is somewhere between a gas and a liquid. She thinks it could offer a first glimpse at how essential minerals and nutrients like gold, copper and iron are leached out of the entrails of the Earth and released into the oceans.

Liquids boil and evaporate as temperature and pressure rise. But push both factors beyond a critical point and something odd happens: the gas and liquid phase merge into one supercritical fluid. For water, this fluid is denser than vapour, but lighter than liquid water.

Water and seawater have both been pushed past this critical point in labs, but until Koschinsky and her colleagues sailed to just south of the Atlantic equator in 2006, no-one had seen supercritical fluids in nature. Geochemists suspected that if they were to find them anywhere, they would be coming out of very deep hydrothermal vents.

In 2005, a team of scientists including Koschinsky visited 5° south, as part as a six-year project to investigate the southern end of the mid-Atlantic Ridge. There, they discovered a new set of vents, which they revisited in 2006 and 2007, lowering a thermometer into them each time.

Computer models suggest that the fluid that comes out of these black smokers initially seeps down into surrounding cracks in the seabed, gradually getting deeper and hotter as it approached the Earth's magma. Eventually, at 407 °C and 300 bars of pressure, the water becomes supercritical.

Because supercritical water is far less dense than liquid water, it shoots up to the seabed like a bubble and it is spat out into the ocean through vents. From their first visit in 2005, the team found temperatures in the vents were at least 407 °C, and even reached 464 °C for periods of 20 seconds.

Supercritical water leaches metals and other elements out of rock far more efficiently than liquid water or vapour. Gold, copper, iron, manganese, sulphur and many more are brought out of the Earth's guts when the water is ejected from the black smokers.

Some, such as sulphur, provide energy to the locally adapted organisms, which have no light to power a food chain. Manganese is similarly used as an energy source by microbes higher up in the water column. Iron is essential for the growth of all phytoplankton.

Koschinsky estimates up to half the manganese and one tenth of the iron found in the oceans could come from vents. But because supercritical fluids have never been observed in nature, little is really known about how this happens. "We stand to greatly improve our models of fluid circulation and heat and mass transfer," says Margaret Tivey, a geochemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) in Massachusetts.

Because of the extreme conditions, computer models are the only way of understanding the processes that drag elements out of the seafloor at hot vents. "It's not yet possible to drill into active vents," explains Koschinsky. "Temperatures are so high, much of drilling equipment would melt and joins would not work anymore." The data from the new vents will be invaluable in testing the models.

"The findings are significant," says Dan Fornari, also of WHOI. "The high temperature of the venting is especially interesting as this [mid-ocean ridge] does not spread very rapidly. "

The Pacific spreads faster than the Atlantic, bringing magma closer to the seabed. For this reason, geochemists expected to find supercritical seawater there too. "So one can presume that this portion of the south mid-Atlantic ridge is in a very magmatic phase and has been for a few years," adds Fornari.

In the Pacific, vents tend to cool after a year or so, but it is likely that the Two Boats and Sisters Peak have been active since an earthquake shook the region in 2002. "The magma body underneath is probably enormous," says Koschinsky.

Her colleague Colin Devey of the University of Kiel in Germany is not so sure. "The explanation could be that there's lot of magma, but after a few more years of high temperatures, it's going to get to the point where it will be embarrassing how much magma there needs to be to maintain them for that long."

He thinks the long-standing temperatures could indicate something more fundamental. The fact that vents cool much more quickly in the Pacific could indicate the crust there is much more water-logged than it is in the Atlantic, where it could be "dry as a biscuit".
