Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 November, 2007 : - - Soup Bowls, Barbados – Josie Graves (Isabella, PRI) capped off the 2007 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Men’s season with a win at the inaugural Reef Classic at Soup Bowls in Barbados. The ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 1-Star event enjoyed its first-ever season as an ASP-sanctioned event, making history for the surf-rich Caribbean country of Barbados.

The three-day event saw 96 competitors from 19 different countries take to the waves this weekend to battle it out in swell ranging from one-to-three feet (1 metre), and although conditions were not reflective of Soup Bowls’ raw power and intensity, plenty of high-performance action was on offer.

Graves, who had looked in devastating form all weekend, reveled in the marginal final day conditions, eliminating Ryan Briggs (Jacksonville, FL) in the Semifinals before dispatching of veteran Matt Keenan (Ocean City, NJ) to claim the inaugural Reef Classic Barbados crown.

Keenan’s tack-sharp backhand assault and impeccable wave selection saw the veteran grab an 8.0 out of a possible 10 on his opening wave in the Final clash, but the inconsistent conditions would fail to produce another scoring ride for the veteran, allowing for Graves’ early heat approach of catching several scoring rides to emerge victorious.

The Reef Classic Barbados caps off the 2007 ASP North America season, and the remaining ASP WQS events of 2007 will be decided in Hawaii over the next two weeks. First up in 2008 will be the ASP WQS 5-Star O’Neill SI Pro presented by Ron Jon at Sebastian Inlet, Florida from January 4-11, 2008.

Josie Graves rules waves

PUERTO RICAN SURFER Josie Graves is the top man of the day when he won the 2007 Reef classic.

Greaves consistently got out to a good start in his heats, getting two good ride under his belt early to take and maintain an winning lead in his heat.

ALL THE HOPES that rested on the shoulders of local surfer Mark Holder faded yesterday when he bowed out at the end of Day 2 of the Reef Classic at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, St Joseph.

Surfing in what was expected to be the toughest and most exciting heat of the day because it contained three former champions, all four surfers suffered when Mother Nature refused to cooperate and left them lying flat in the water for most of the 20-minute heat.

With mere minutes left on the clock Holder, who won the event in 1991, caught his third wave needing at least six points to take second position. However, it wasn't enough and he had to watch New Jersey surfer Dean Randazzo, who won the event in 1999, take that position and relegate him to fourth place.

British surfer Sam Lamroy, who won the Reef Classic in 2004, and who fared better at the hands of Mother Nature, advanced to first place, while Josie Graves, from the Canary Islands, was second.

International event

Holder's exit means that the Men's Open Final will be an international event as the other local surfers Chris Clarke, Barry Banfield and Stefan Corbin who ended up surfing against each other in Heat I of Round III, as well as Lewis St John and Bruce Mackie all failed to advance.

Corbin, the national open as well as junior champion, initially beat a strong field of two United States surfers and a Trinidadian surfer, to advance out of Round II.

However, Barry Banfield ended up third and fourth, respectively, in a heat won by Chilean surfer Manuel Selman and United States surfer Ross Stephens.

Shocking exits also came from the No. 1 seed Sebastian Alarco on the Latin American & amp; Caribbean (ALAS) tour, who bowed out in the first heat of the day, and top ranked Trinidadian surfer Alan Davis.

7.7 magnitude quake in Chile Tsunami warning issued

Environmental News | Tsunami Warnings

Powerful &.& magnitude quake hits northern Chile - Tsunami warning issued

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 November, 2007 : - - A powerful, 7,7-magnitude earthquake hit northern Chile on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey reported. It said the quake, 60km deep, was centred 106km west of the town of Calama and struck at 3.40pm GMT. A tsunami warning was issued for the coast of Chile, CNN reported, but Chilean authorities discounted the chances of a tsunami.

The National Emergency Office in Chile said it had no information on any casualties but it was evaluating the impact of the quake. The quake hit an area where there are many large copper mines. State copper miner Codelco had no immediate comment on possible damages.

An airport in Antofagasta, 1 200km north of Santiago, had to evacuate staff when the cement cracked, Radio Cooperativa de Santiago reported. The northern cities of Calama and Arica lost electrical power, and panicked residents ran into the streets. The quake was initially reported at 7,8 magnitude by the agency and later verified at 7,7 on the Richter scale.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning for Hawaii, west across the Pacific, but said the quake would cause only small non-destructive sea level changes and strong unusual currents for a few hours. "Based on all available data there is no destructive tsunami threat to Hawaii," the centre said in its advisory.

The most powerful earthquake recorded to date struck Chile on May 22 1960, measured at magnitude 9,5 and killing between 4 000 and 6 000 people. It sent a deadly tsunami racing to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines and eastern New Zealand, among others.

Russell Winter wins Firewire Expression Session at Gul Newquay Open

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 November, 2007 : - - A closely fought contest saw Russell Winter beat off the competition to win the Firewire Expression Session at the Gul Newquay Open this weekend. The top 10 seeds on the BPSA Tour and 2 wildcards were invited to compete for a Firewire board worth £500, plus a £300 cheque.

There is a big buzz around the boards, which have just arrived in Europe, and the Pro’s were all stoked to try them out in a competitive situation. Firewire took along a selection of boards, which the pro’s picked from to ride in the heats.

In windy but contestable conditions, the judges saw the competitors pull out all the stops to satisfy the judging criteria of ‘Best Wave’.

There were some outstanding performances, notable from Joss Ash with impressive aerials ad Johnny Fryer, who was flying, and using the boards to power through his turns. In the end, the undisputed winner was Russell Winter, who blasted 3 powerful turns on one wave with speed and a smooth style.

Winter said: “I’m stoked to have won, and it’s great to be able to add the board I used in the heat to my quiver. I’m really looking forward to trying it in different conditions, and I’ll definitely be taking it with me to Hawaii tomorrow.”

Firewire Marketing manager, Catherine James said: “It was great to get the Pros onto the Firewires, and seeing how they all used them to enhance their individual strengths really showed the boards potential.”

Rip Curl celebrates Mick Fanning's 2007 ASP world title

Team News

Rip Curl's Mick Eugene Fanning new ASP world champion > Francais ci dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 November, 2007 : - - Mick Eugene Fanning was born in the Western Sydney suburb of Penrith in 1981, but has called the north coast of NSW home since his family relocated him there as a youngster. Following his older brothers into the surf, Mick improved his water skills quickly in the wave mecca of Australia’s Gold Coast.

Mick developed his surfing amongst a hotbed of talent, taking over the punchy beach breaks of D’bah and the grinding world class points of Kirra and Burleigh. He was turning into an all-round class act and evolved into one of Australia’s “future surfing stars”. Fanning forged a close bond with fellow teenage stars Joel Parkinson and Dean Morrison and the infamous ‘Cooly Kids’ crew eventually pushed their way onto the world stage.

In 1999 Mick made some marks on the contest scene that set him apart from other juniors chasing glory. Seven skins in a row at the money-rich Konica Super Skins event at Sandon Point netted him $21,000 and proved he could mix it with the world's elite after beating Mark Occhilupo Luke Egan, Beau Emerton and Damien Hardman along the way. He then claimed the prestigious HB/OE Pro Junior title at Narrabeen and followed it with a win the next week at the Jetty Surf Pro Junior at Bells Beach.

In 2001 Mick was given a wildcard entry into the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach – a ticket straight to the main stage of international surfing. Mick lived up to the hype and won the contest in emphatic fashion, dedicating the victory to his deceased brother, Sean. He also won the ASP WQS Title that year.

Virgin Atlantic allows board in addition to bag allowance

Virgin Atlantic allows board in addition to bag allowance

Surf Travel News

Passengers can take one board in addition to checked baggage allowance

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 November, 2007 : - - Virgin Atlantic, one of the world’s leading long-haul airlines, has come to the aid of sports travellers by announcing that they can take one piece of sporting equipment in addition to their checked baggage allowance. The announcement comes after rival carrier, British Airways, decided to ban surfboards and other sporting equipment, such as pole vaults and javelins, in the cargo hold on its flights from 6th November 2007.

This means that, as long as the equipment complies with size and weight allowances, Virgin Atlantic travellers can check in to the hold of the aircraft their diving equipment, golf equipment, fishing equipment, hang gliders, snow skis, surfboards, windsurfing boards, booms and sails, bicycles, paragliders, canoes and kayaks – all free of charge. Sporting wheelchairs are also considered sports equipment.

Paul Dickinson, Sales and Marketing Director, Virgin Atlantic, said “Virgin Atlantic continues to be the airline for sports enthusiasts unlike others who are doing everything they can to prevent the gold medallists of the future transporting their equipment. Our new sports equipment policy enables all sports travellers, whether Olympic teams or not, to enjoy their journey throughout.”

The sporting equipment can weigh no more than 32kg, unless with prior consent, and must not exceed overall dimensions of 62” (width + height + length). If the sports equipment weighs more than 32kg, the item will be treated as two pieces of checked baggage, excess baggage charges will then apply.

Sporting equipment weighing more than 45kg will need to be transported as cargo and cannot be accepted as checked baggage. Larger dimensions are allowed for surf boards as outlined in the table below. One surfboard is allowed at a max length of 2.5 m.

The following can be considered as 1 piece of sporting equipment, complying with size and weight.

-Surfboards One surfboard to a max length of 2.5m.

-Golf equipment One bag containing: max. 14 clubs, one dozen balls, one pair of golf shoes.
