ISA seeks global educational standard for surf schools

SA AND SURFING SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT IN 2008

Surfers village Global Surf News, 6 February, 2008 : - - San Diego, Ca -- The business of running surf schools in a professional way remains a key subject for the ISA. As surfing continues to experience explosive growth, so does the need to grow the surfing schools sector in a professional and orderly manner.

From the very beginner all the way to the top professional surfers, surfing education is a key element for the development of surfing. Running surfing schools under worldwide standards will provide for years of sustained growth for schools.

When looking at the world of surf schools its fair to say we see a "mixed bunch", some small, some large, some struggling to survive, some with thriving business, some regulated by government and some not. A certainty is that the sport of surfing will continue to expand in every country and with this increased popularity will come Government controls that require a professional approach to the business of running a surf school.

The ISA has continued its work in the process of appointing "official presenters" around the world for its coaching(surfing instructors) accreditation courses. Currently the ISA has Surfing NZ, Surfing Australia, Hiro Takahashi & Matt Sato- Coombe at AIP Japan, Marcos Conde at CBS Brasil, Johnny Nesslinger at Austrian Surfing and Alessandro Dini at Viareggio Surf school, Italy.

Whilst some National Governing Bodies (NGB's) have their own(non ISA certified) coaching accreditation systems in place, the ISA firmly believes that a global educational standard is essential. The ISA program offers many advantages over individual national programs. During 2007, courses were run by official presenters in all the above areas plus Costa Rica. ISA courses are continually being updated. A new level 1 ISA Surfing Instructor accreditation course will be released by the ISA in July 2008.

Additionally, the ISA also offers its ISA Surf School Registration asentry level recognition for surf schools agreeing to operate under certain minimum safety standards and practices. Before the introduction of the ISA Surf School Register, no global standard was in place. We have had a promising response from surf schools in 2007 and we see 2008 as another strong development year in this program.

Our medium term goal is to bring both the ISA Surf school registration and the professional Accreditation and education ofinstructors and coaches together into a global program. It will give all surfers access to the best knowledge and education no matter where they live and surf.

The ISA is also working closely with a Global Insurance provider, with the aim of establishing and offering to ISA Surf Schools, instructors and coaches, the very first global policy. It will insure and protect surf school operations and their clients, instructors and coaches, NGBs, clubs and events.

We plan to present this much needed product in 2008. Every surf school will at some point in the future be required to have an insurance policy and the ISA intends to have this available to help each NGB and Surf School do business in a professional manner, including insurance protection.

Greater knowledge and better operational standards will bring a greater rate of development to our sport. We believe all these ISA offered improvements, will make 2008 a great year for professional surf instructor and coaches to become part of this better surfing future for surfing education around the world.

FCS launches new X-2 plug

The X2 is the latest version of the World Standard FCS system featuring a new dramatically stronger material. X2 is 40 % stronger than the existing P2 plug. It is the lightest and strongest high performance fin system available in the world today. FCS has done extensive testing by breaking hundreds of systems and comparing the results in specially made cassettes that replicate the rail section of a surfboard. X2 offers all of the benefits of FCS, with 40 % more strength.

Features:

1. Strength. The patented H pattern attaches the plugs with an I-beam of strength from the bottom of the board right through to the deck directly under the rider’s feet. Since the foam in a surfboard has very little strength the H pattern connects the only two structural parts of the board, the fiberglass skins on the deck and the bottom. The H pattern enables the FCS plugs to be the strongest fin system in all of our testing.

2. Performance Weight. The X2 is the lightest fin system available.

3. Performance, Lateral pressure. Because the fins are held in place by two screws that push against the base of the fin, base flex is greatly reduced. The fins feel much more rigid at the base and allow the direct transfer of power from your feet into your turns.

4. Accuracy, Shapers dots are showing: Shapers spend a lot of time on their fin placements and synchronizing them with the performance they’re trying to achieve in a board. We feel it is very important to see the shapers dots because they tell you at a glance that the fin system has been installed accurately. While other box systems require removal of the shapers dots, FCS does not. We know that a quarter inch difference in fin placement can make a big difference on how your board performs. FCS gives you that quality assurance at a glance without complicated measuring.

5. Performance tail flex: Because the FCS plugs have the smallest footprint they allow the tail of the board to flex more naturally. Obviously tail flex is very important because it helps you create speed. It also makes the board more forgiving in radical maneuvers due to the natural adjustment with the curve of the wave and the arc of your turns.

6 Accuracy and Strength cant angles: Accuracy includes cant angles as well. Because X2 is a plug it can be angled dramatically and has a 4 degree cant angle built into the the rail plugs of the system. It is easier to install for the manufacturer because it matches the contour of the bottom of the board better. This allows for a better, stronger installation with truer fin cant angles every time.

7. Adaptability: The small footprint of the X2 plug also allows it to fit easily into boards with channel bottoms, Bonzer concaves, and other dramatic bottom contours.

FCS launch new Fusion pre glass fin system & X-2 plug

Industry News

FCS launches new Fusion pre-glass fin system and X2 plug

FCS Fusion goes in before the board is glassed. We developed the fusion system specifically for EPS boards. With the growing demand for epoxy surfboards we felt obligated to offer our customers a product that offered the performance advantages of FCS in a system that is installed before the board is laminated. e.g. pre glass

Our goal in designing this new Fusion system was to offer significant improvements and advantages over pre glass systems currently on the market.

Features:

1. Strength. Fusion is the strongest pre glass system on the market. This was achieved by incorporating a double parabolic outline. (read: unique peanut shape) which offers constant curves that prevent the straight line shearing that fiberglass is prone to. We also incorporated a high density foam foundation. This is a patented installation feature that creates a material gradient using a bonded high density foam underneath the system to dramatically increase the impact resistance and break strength while keeping the board light and lively.

2. Performance lateral pressure. Because the fins are held in place by two screws that push against the base of the fin, base flex is greatly reduced. The fins feel much more rigid at the base and allow the direct transfer of power from your feet into your turns.

3. A shorter footprint to allow more natural tail flex in the board giving it a livelier more responsive feel.

4. Reduced Weight. Fusion is the lightest pre glass fin system available.

5. Adjustability: We wanted to offer some forward adjustability for people who wanted to fine-tune their board’s performance by moving their fins.

6. Accuracy: We feel it is very important to see the shapers dots as they tell you at a glance that the fin system has been installed accurately. While all other box systems require removal of the shapers dots, fusion does not. We know that a quarter inch difference in fin placement can make a big difference on how your board performs. FCS gives you that quality assurance at glance without complicated measuring.

Accuracy includes cant angles as well. Because fusion has different cant angles built into the system it’s easier to install for the manufacturer because it matches the contour of the bottom of the board better. This allows for a better stronger installation with truer fin cant angles every time.
