The Divisions to be contested this year are as follows:
Junior Boys - Under 16 and Under 20 (cannot turn 21 in year of contest)
Junior Girls - Under 18
Open Men
Open Women
Senior Men (28 - 35)
Senior Women (25 & over)
Open Long Board
Open Body Board
Masters (35 - 45 years)
Grand Masters (45 & over)

The Junior Boy Under 18 Division has been replaced by the Under-20 Division in order to provide greater exposure for our Juniors. Additional Divisions have been re-introduced to encourage more members to surf in contests. The Senior Women Division has been introduced as a pilot for SOTY 1 to encourage more women to compete.

The Under-12 and Menehune (under 11) Divisions have been taken out of the SOTY series since the conditions may prove to be too difficult for them. The idea is to introduce a series of contests especially for these young surfers. Discussions are on-going to finalize these arrangements.

Youngsters with the skill level are still encouraged to surf in the Junior Divisions of the SOTY series to help develop their surfing skill and performance in contests. Entrance fees are $25 for the first Division and $15 for each additional Division. For Non-members, the entrance fee is $35, but no SOTY points will be awarded to non-members.

Please note that for the time being, the Committee has decided to revert back to the traditional method of judging until there is a noticeable increase in the number of judges and the necessary technology made available. The intention is to re-intrduce the new judging scheme in 2010 after the necessary equipment has been procured.

Awards will be given for the Surfer of the Year Championships, Nationals, the School Championships and the Big Wave Contest. The Committee is actively seeking to raise funds to ensure the success of all these events, to send teams overseas and to secure prize money for the end-of-year SOTY Awards. Details regarding fund-raising events will be included in the next Newsletter.

Given the limited time-frame, the Team for the WJSC 2009 in Ecuador has been selected based on their performance in the 2008 SOTY series and their general performance in contests. The Team for the ISA WSG in Costa Rica will be picked based on performance in the TRIALS slated for February 28th.

In addition, team members will be required to undergo training as required, drug tests in keeping with the BSA's and ISA's zero tolerance policy and to abide by the BSA's Code of Conduct.

Before closing, the BSA Executive Committee would like to thank the out-going committee for their efforts in 2008 and the Members for their past support. Once again, we extend to you best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009 and look forward to working with you for the development of this beautiful sport that we all love!
